The Alexander Technique helps cure back
or neck aches or pains, and can provide relief from
posture-related problems.
Some people come to the Alexander Technique
purely to enhance their general feeling of wellbeing
and to take control of their body. This is especially
true of singers, actors and sportsmen and women all
seeking to improve performance. Others discover the
Alexander Technique in order to alleviate pain, stress
or discomfort.
This latter group, in the course of addressing
their particular problem, discover they are also learning
to achieve more with less effort and that they waste
less energy by exercising the proper use of their body.
| "I feel an
amazing lightness at the end of my lessons, like
I've been given the body of someone ten years
younger!" |
The Alexander Technique has been practised and developed
for more than 100 years. Many famous people are ardent
practitioners, using the Alexander Technique to help
them cope with their busy livestyle.
The Learning Process
The teacher, Dorothy Whitford, works with the pupil
on a series of activities, guiding with her hands whilst
simultaneously giving verbal instructions and explaining
the purpose of the exercise. At the end of each lesson
the pupil is then equipped to carry out the exercises
they have learned, at home, for 20 to 30 minutes each
day. Through a series of lessons, the range of activities
and consequent affect on the body grows, to a point
where the pupil becomes essentially self-sufficient
with only an occasional need for 'refresher' lessons.
The technique is not a 'quick fix' (although striking
early results do sometimes occur). Rather it allows
the pupil to achieve a lifelong solution with their
particular problem being addressed whilst bringing about
a general feeling of wellbeing at the same time.
During lessons you can learn to:
- be poised and stand tall
- be alert and focussed whilst at the same time feeling
calm
- be active and energetic, without excess effort or
tension
- be more self-aware and co-ordinated
Whether you have a particular problem that requires
attention or you seek to use yourself more effectively
in everyday life, contact Dorothy Whitford for more
